Dodgy water temp guage

Driving to work this morning the water temp guage seemed to take a lot longer to get up to temp than normal almost as if it was sticking....
Once it was up to temp and stable it kept randomly dropping back down to cold for a few mins, then back up to normal for the rest of the trip...
Anyone have any experience of this happening to them?
Where is the temp sender that links up to the guages?

Having the exact same problem at the moment! Been doing a bit of research and looks like the water temp sensor is on its way out most likely.
Only a couple of quid for a new one, but still a pain in the arse lol.
EDIT: It is on the right hand side of the engine, next to a coolant pipe, has a green ring round with a black plug.

Im guessing here...But the sensor probably feeds into the ECU...which means if the sensor is FUBAR, then the engine management system might get a bit arsey!...
Is it the sensor in the housing for the thermostat?

Its the green sensor

on the coolant piping. Front right of engine if you are looking at it

be very quick and be sure to get the rubber o ring out. your gonna have most your coolant dump all over the floor if your not quick lol

Its ok.....gives me an excuse to change the coolant anyway....
So we sure its the temp sender, not likely to be a dodgy connection somewhere in the engine bay or on the clocks?
Might as well order a new sender 2mo....I dont like having my guages misbehaving...

Definately. I had this twice on the old polo!

Its kinda odd... Unplugged the battery overnight to cure my window problems (solved that one!)..
And the guage did not mess me about on the way to work...coincidence I suspect, but weird...
