car doesn't start intermittantly, the dash displays the car symbol with the key below it. tried the second key and it does the same. do you guys think it could be the ignition barrel playing up?? anyone had any similar issues??
Thanks

You should not just start thowing money at this problem by guessing the actual root cause of the fault. Chances are that it is the loop on the start switch - but I don't know what it costs - does Haynes make it sound like an easy task? VAG-COM is your servant in this sort of situation, you have already tried the obvious thing (the other key) and this function will not normally hicup and "unsync" like the remote locking function - and the immobiliser still needs to be able to recognise all valid keys. I'd certainly guess at the immobiliser loop thing that talks to the keys if you were going to buy anything - could be that VAG-COM would not know which "end" was causing the immobiliser to "block" though.
I think that I've said don't do this/do this - sorry! (but VAG-COM is very handy to have!)
To be harsh, I'd look on

Cheers for the input RUM4HO
I'm not sure what's going on, but at a guess i think it might be the key reader at the back of the barrel that reads the chip in the key.
