Prepare to sell up and go Older? Or go Big on the G?

My just be a passing trend or lapse of mine, but I'm really thinking about other projects.

It's always been a plan of mine to go older, and put ALOT of cash into the next project. It's definitely happening, but I'm just not sure just how far off that time is. I was thinking mark1 Golf for sure, but the old Polos have also been tickling my fancy recently.

I've got my car to a pretty satisfactory standard now, and everything else I'd like to do here on after on the GTi is going to be pretty big in terms of expenses. So question is do I spend more money on this one or save it all for the next one?!

Here's some pics to back my questioning 8)

Mark 1 Golf's are awesome, & the GTI is a Legend. To make a decent job of what will be 20-25yr old car is gonna take a lot of cash & lot of time.

However, at the end you can look at an amazing work of art! 8)

A guy on swdubs is putting a g40 engine in a mk1 polo. Now THAT's gonna be interesting! Be nice if he gets it looking like the white polo on classics you've got pictured. 8)

Retro is the Future!

Theres so much to consider! Bare in mind that during the beginning of an old school project you will be driving around in a car that is pretty uncomfortable, a 6n is bad enough!

On the other hand, a show winning mk1 golf, which you could perhaps bring up to date (1.8 20vt, sound proofing etc) Would be so rewarding and lets face it!

Finally, your gti has come such a long way, would be a shame to leave it! Although I've no doubt somebody would happily take it off your hands and finish it!

In my opinion, the best way to decide is to look at how much money you would realistically be wanting to spend on each. Then if it comes out that old school is going to be a lot more expensive and you still cant stop thinking about it... just go for it!!!

I want a Mk1 GTI someday, such a pretty car, none of the safety crap all these cars have, just a proper old skwl motor. It's light, and all power. It would definitely be a big investment Tim, but would be so rewarding if you where to commit to it and follow it through.

Now you've had a Polo, I'd probably be looking for a change, but there is always time in the future to do this, you are only 20, and in uni right now so your funding is going to be somwhat limited. Give it alot of thought mate!

Tim:
This time last year i had exactly the same idea. Love mk1 Golf GTI's and it would be awesome to do it. After a few weeks of thinking it over though, it just wasn't sensible to do it at that point in my life! Not sure what your situation is like, but i know i wasn't ready to that sort of commitment. (bit like relationships i think, haha)

When i'm settled in my job, got my own house, and can afford to plough money into a project like that whilst still been in a comfortable living position, then thats when i'll take on a mk1 Golf GTI project.

Up to you at end of the day though mate! :)

Cheers for the input guys. As said by alot of you, there is ALOT of thinking it through to do.

I'm trying to decide whether me being at uni is an advantage or disadvantage to this kind of project. Money isn't a problem (that side of things should hopefully be sorted soon). It's just time and effort.

I have the advantage that I don't need a car much so off the road is not an issue. but i'm not home much and it's not very practical up here....

Tim, your GTI looks amazing from the pictures I've seen but the thought of a Mk1 Golf GTI (especially that one in the first picture  8) ) would make me want one. I take it you would be selling the current car to replace?

Old cars are prone for breaking, rust and safety remember, but they don't make them like them like that anymore which is why they are so fantastic and dare I say PIMP :D Is it just a new project you want for a daily? If so just find an old mk1,2 or 3 polo (similar to what Alex is doing) and run that around? (or if you're like me, with insurance too high you want a cheap 1L Mk3 :D)

my previous post wasnt too helpfull!

so you mean keep the polo and get a mk1?

if thats the case then yes do it.....if i could go back i think i wouldve kept my golf GTTDI and bought a mk1 to do up as a show car rather than the 20v polo and the cabby

Nah the mark1 (whether it be mark1 polo or golf) would be a daily show car. Meaning the polo would go!

Can't afford to run two cars, and I don't think I can afford to put in what I want to put into my Polo. Plus have sufficient funds for my mark1 project, which would consist of respray, 1.8t lump in, retrim, full system the lot!

I love the mk1 gti's, the black one pictured really is awesome...but in my opinion the polo looks better (only because the rear of the golf imo isnt that pretty with the funky exhaust thats not sure where its going).. you will miss your pimped xenons & smart interior...but if you can look past these things then do it!
