Ouch, i'll be paying £1k (or around that) with Direct line with the following info.

Dad as main driver
Me as a named
Third party fire and theft
Discount 10% online
Discount for having mum with direct line
Discount for having home insurance with them
3 years no claims for dad
Legal Cover

Hope that helps,

Daz

You tried Churchill? I've got a 1.0L 5 door as well and I'm paying £1500 fully comp, still a lot I know but better than £2000...

I used the autotrader quote thingy, 1.6 GL when I was 17 and had had my licence for around 4 months. £1026 I paid, fully comp, own policy. Shop around and make up quotes. they want your cash so they should knock a few quid off!

It all depends where you live, park, alarm, PassPlus etc.

at your age its best to get it done with specialists for students. I paid in excess of £1750 once for insurance so I know how you feel.

They say you get a online discount, which isn't actually true. They'll give you a discount from the initial quote they give you, which is only to get you to take up insurance with them.

Always phone up and you'll even see the same company will give you a cheaper quote then your initial online quote. Try forcing them to go down till you can't anymore.

My first year of insuring a car I was already 22yrs old BUT I still paid as much as you will. Did the policy under my name TPFT and included my sister to reduce the blow a little!!!

Try Admiral or Elephant and add a Woman drive as a secondary driver make sure shes like ur mum and hope she's got no points and 4 years no claims, and get the 10 month deal, get ur NCB ASAP. And get ur mum or dad to get a credit card for you and pay it all off at onces and then make sure the credit card has a 6-12 month no interest on purcahses and pay off the insurance on that. It will be the cheapest way i can tel you :)

^^ Getting a experienced female driver on your policy does reduce the premium. Try using the insurance search engines like www.confused.com www.moneysupermarket www.gocompare.com www.onlyinsurance.com & see how much you can get it for.

Also an article to read on insurance quotes & how to get the best spread is here

I think the cheapest for young drivers is Tesco value insurance. Go to their site and there are 2 options. Make sure you click value. Your quote should be at least a couple of hundred quid cheeper.

^^ What that guy said :)

Elephant are surprisingly cheap for new drivers, especially if you can add some women as named drivers. 10 month bonus accellerator is great, although be aware that other insurers won't accept it if you try to transfer to them later - kinda ties you in to Elephant.

Also, please, please don't get one of your parents to be the main driver and name you on their policy. Yes, it makes it a lot cheaper and I've been there and know how important that is - but if you have an accident, and unfortunately that's always a very real possibility especially early on, you are up the creek without a paddle. Your insurer probably won't pay out (they're not daft, they won't honestly believe that your parents have a 1 litre polo as their main car!), and you will struggle to get reinsured afterwards. Sorry if that sounds negative, but it's worth bearing in mind!
Also, you don't build up any no claims that way, so it's a lot more expensive in the long run.

Anyway, best of luck!

go on your own insurance as early as possible. I didn't for 2 years and highly regret it now. Your choice of car is only going to get bigger and faster (usually) so it'll become harder and harder to get a decent price if you've just been a named driver all the time.

I'm only paying about £600 a year on my insurance (second year) on my 1.4CL with Quinn Direct.

I went with them as I was learning and it was cheap while I was on my provisional (about £70 a month) but as soon as I passed my test it went up loads (£160 a month!!!) but I stuck with it as I only had 3 months left until my first year of no claims.

As soon as those 3 months passed my insurance went down loads so I only pay around £50 a month which is pretty good considering I'm only in second year.

This is all third-party, fire and theft with me being the only driver.
