Dead car - part 2

Hi everyone,

Just thought I'd share my current problem... the crank sensor! Gone.caput.Anyone else had this go ?

Went to leave work the other day and she started up, but then died straight away. Me n mates attempted to push start, but it was dead.
Over the last few months, pulling away in first and second gear has been really lumpy and very jerky as if its about to stall, so i'm hoping this is linked.So the AA dude came out and did a few electrical tests and didnt get a reading off the crank sensor, and towed me home.

So its going to VW today for a new crank sensor (£102.74) and then the labors costing (£95) wooo.Im hoping that the crank sensor will sort out the judderyness though!

£95 to fit a crank sensor LOL....unless I am mistaken...its a 15 min job!

The crank sensor is known to fail....You will also get a lumpy idle and power pull if the coil pack and HT leads are worn.... Thats also a common issue...

i have exactly the same problem...

When started up a few times it died straight away and pulling away from junctions in first gear or ocassionally second gear it gets 'lumpy' and stuttery like as if the car is getting pulled back and fowards...? is this the same problem you are having?

however my car hasnt died that i cant drive it off at all.

15 minute job ?! ah crap - its one of those things i guess, if you need something doing urgently you have to pay ze price :(

yeah youre right tegwin, those were some similar tale tale signs i was getting also!

lol! yosin, that is esactly what mine was doing! i thought it was a clutch/transmission thing at first ? 1st and 2nd gear pulling away is lumpy as custard and would require me to rev to balls of it to stop it stalling.Also, on smooth motorways at 80-90 the car would pull like its pulling/resisting...

So yeah, my problem is very similar to yours. Ill post on here if anything else 'happens' or is wrong

Lumpy idle/pull can be caused ba HUGE number of variables...

If you have VAG com I would be interested to see what it points to...

It should be able to detect a faulty CPS (crap position sensor)....or any other sensor...

just thought id update the thread and let everyone know the outcome for future purposes.

Basically, the keys sensor had gone. The AA man failed to check that before i sent it to VW of whom carried out £160 of labor.
After they initially fitted the Crank Sensor, VW rang me to say it still wasnt starting and that they needed to investigate further.
Come 8'oclock they discover that the keys sensor has gone and i take my spare down, and straight away it started.

Putting a new Crank Sensor in does not sort the lumpy low gears issue or the juddery pulling problem in high gears anyway.

So how comes the car isnt starting? if it was starting up before it got to them surely by fitting in a new crank sensor it wouldnt affect it starting up?

However just want to clarify that the crank sensor has nothing to do with the lumpyness in low revs in low gears.

i dont think i have the problem of pulling in high gear it seems to be quite smooth but i will pay more attention to it tomorrow and let you know since i have the same problem as you, and maybe if you could point me in right direction to sort this stupid problem out :D

basically the car not starting up problem was to do with the actual car key sensor for the imboiliser...

Yeah Yosin, i'm really debating going to a VAG garage and getting them to fix it once and for all, as i keep having to rev it say...2300 revs in order for it not to stall, its as if the biting point on the clutch is rubbish or the throttle is far too sensitive?

Hmm, may book it in next month and get it sorted. You gonna do the same ?

yeah might do see how the finances are going though first.

yeah i see what you mean saying that have to rev off like a nob to stop it from juddering...and everyone else may think your a t**t for booting off like that so quick and also it can be dangerous!... so i usually just quickly put it into second gear as soon as i pull out.


so i guess the problem still isnt solved for you yet lol..good luck with it mate :)

hi, all of those with the lumpy idle, are you running up rated air filters, ie induction kits?

it aint about the lumpy idle...its lumpy when in gear pulling out of junctions etc.

well the gti can be lumpy at take off under medium/ low load due 2 an uprated air filter because of the air intake, this can be normal on these

Lol yosin! i know what you mean... can't be good in the long run for our front tyres either :P ?

Yeah i'm gonna go to a local VDub garage next month i think and get it fixed... i doubt it will be a big job ?

how does it affect the front tyres?

yeah i probs just run it through a diagnostic check and see what happens. Unless you find out the real solution to it then i just do that lol. i hate to go through diagnostics and come home with same problem but solved others.

however i have gotten used to it and found my ways around it lol
