Erratic Idling

sometimes my idle is fine, other times it rises and falls, then struggles a bit and it's fine again, sometimes it just cuts out.
What do you think the problem is?
I'm gonna take the throttle body thing off and use some some carb cleaner I have.
I had the same problem on mt digi mk2 GTi before and it was the ISV, but looking around, I can't find one! (Or not anything that resembles the one on a mk2 Golf anyway.

Is there any pattern to the rising and falling idle speed? Does it only screw up when cold or when warm?

The ISV is underneath the inlet manifold, so is tricky to get it off to clean it. I know they're prone to sticking and some people say a blast out with carb cleaner is normally enough to sort them out.

The blue temp sender can also cause problems with erratic idling I believe, but someone else will be able to confirm that - Dan?

On mine, the erratic idleing was caused by a knackered throttle position sensor. But seeing as g40s dont have these then its probably the ISV. Its easy to test the blue temp sensor. Check out the article on the club polo website. All you need is a digital multimeter.

WRONG f*****g PLUGS!
I had NGK N7EVX's (or the like) in it rather than The bosch W9DPO's (or whatever code they are  ). the bloke that owned it before was a frikkin mechanic too! I changed the leads cuz they were hard as nails, the oil, filter dizzy cap and rotor arm, fixed the exhaust leak and it seems ok so far. AlthoughI have only travelled about 15 miles :?
