Hi All,
The last few days, the car has been making this kind of grinding noise when the clutch is engaged. Its not there in neutral, and its not there when the car isnt moving, but it goes away when you depress the clutch
Anyone have any ideas?
Thanks
Alex

Its not the box. Its not a whining noise, and i can engage all the gears with no problems
The noise is more like interrupted nails scraping down a blackboard

i could always engage all my gears too though when both my boxes went.....

I think It is from the differential gear. From the ''ESP'' differential part is very weak on loading heaviness.

It's definitely your box mate. The grinding sound is the bearings rattling about in there

polo gtis dont have esp and the diff isnt a gear they are made up of 2 planet wheels 2 sun wheels a pinion and crown!
alex trust me its ither the diff bearings or 5th needle bearing gear!
ive done sooooooo many now i cant even count!
as its the bearings you will have no problems engaging gears but the bearing will colaps and blow a hole in the gearbox casing!
pop the end case of the gearbox 3 8m bolts (u wont lose much oil if u just jack up that side of the car as high as u can!) and put your hand on the lay shaft a check it for play!
ither way the box will have 2 come out but replacing the bearings is childs play! rearly i can do the bearing's in half hour of having the box out!
and im sure u could get the guide and have tec mates!

no alex they dont have esp full stop! if they did you would not be able 2 wheel spin! and if you cant do that then u have a real problem

Mine has ESP (it was an optional extra) as I have got the traction control light and ESP light on before
And to confirm it, check page 37 of your owners manual in the instructions bit. Tells you all about it
