2004 Polo 1.4D Twist

Please can anyone help with this strange problem????

After stopping the car and turning off the ignition, then locking the car, after 1 minute the windows drop (on their own) and the central locking system unlock (on its own) and clicks continmuously with the lock buttons going up and down very quickly, after about 1 minute it all stops (windows still down, car unlocked), and then the whole thing starts again.


I have had to take the fuses out for the electric windows and the central locking system, other wise the car would be unlocked with the windows always open.

Please, please can anyone help. I am tearing my hair out.

Locking with the fob or the key?

My 54 1.4TDI Twist, has central locking, but not remote central locking, so locking is only possible with the key.

So I park up, turn off engine, get out of the car, lock (whole car) with the key in the drivers door walk away.......... about 1 minute later, the two front electric windows open fully of their own accord, and the central locking system unlocks the whole car, and then the lock buttons/motors click up and down very quickly and continuously..............then it stops and 1 minute later it starts again, and so on.

So I have had to take out the fuses for windows and central locking system, otherwise the car is always unlocked with the front windows open

Also, this is really bizarre, the recirc button (left of aircon switch) is always on..........., this is really annoying as it does not allow fresh air into the car, only recirc air, so the car steams up. I push the recirc button and the light goes out for 5 seconds, and then comes straight back on again, i.e. recirc activated.

I read in the manual that when you put the car into reverse, the recirc button is automatically engaged to prevent fumes from coming when whilst reversing, however on my car it is engaged all the time, except guess what , when I put the car in reverse the recirc light goes out.......... so it is functioning back to front.

This is a great car, and it is only 4 years old, I have never had a car with these weird electrical faults before.

Is there some some of reset procedure......... the local VW dealer wants 100 quid just to look at it..........

The recir issue is due to the recirc valv having stopped working - thats a garage job as a fair amount of the dash has to come out to fix it

As for the lock issue, its due to what sounds like the microswitch in the drivers door lock which controls the windows when turned to the left or right and held (ie open or close all windows). A new CL pump in the door should fix it.

If you're close by to someone who has VAG.COM then it might be a good start. Unless you knew what faults the car is reporting, it is difficult to say. Somethings could be easily set right if its something minor amiss - that then causes such phantom errors.

However, your central locking issue sounds like maybe an earthing issue?

My Local garage found the fault (for £47.00), it was the door lock unit, they replaced it for £148.00, so total cost for this problem was £195.00

Yeah, they charged me £85.00 +VAT for the part, and two hours labour at £47.00 per hour

Ouch Well at least it works again. Did they give you the old one back?

no, do you think I should ask for it?

Might as well keep it. That way you can salvage bits out of it if this one goes pop - maybe even open it up and see what went wrong. (thats what i do anyway )

Youll probs needs a new motor in it.

You know what engine code your car has? I might be able to find the service diagram for sorting it out

Log book at the front. starts with a B i think. Three letters together in capitals.
