how much are you thinking of spending Trav?
canon and Nikon are both good makes for SLRs but theres plenty more brands out there such as Sony that have recently joined the market

I have a canon 400d which ive found easy to get to grips with a lot of options, so as a first camera i cant fault it. i think it was around £380 when i bought it a year ago but that included a lens + camera bag etc and by now would of went down alot

pop into your local london camera exchange
they seem to know there stuff im sure they will happily offer advice =]

the canon 1000d has been reviewed to be very good and is quite cheap considering.

I'm splashing out on a 450d when I got the money.

i think the two best starter dslr kits are the nikon d40x or the canon eos 400d
