Hi,

This is my first post and i came across this site which i think is wonderful to know that something like this exists, (online mechanic brains)

I need help with my vw polo 1.4L 1999.

I have had the car for 4 years and its been great but i have had few stuff done in the past like new exhaust, wheels, something called skimming headgasket, sorry im not too good with tech terms.

Its been 1 week since i have been getting a new problem and i wanted to ask you guys first before going and getting ripped off at the mechanics!

When i start my car it starts and then well i wait for abit until it warms up, i wait until the temp goes in the middle which is normal. Well when i press gas the car makes a sound like its going to turn off, misfires.

i dont know what the exact term is but like a cough sound and then when i take my put off the gas its normal.

I got out and checked my exhaust and its fine but it sound like coughing and then normal. Only when i press the gas.

Well then i tried to take the car around in my street but it switch off! I tried starting it but now it doesnt start :S

If i leave it for a night it will start but then same thing will happen.

The battery is brand new and also the exhaust!

Also i want to mention, this happened 2 weeks ago while i was driving, the coughing happened when i was driving, i thought it will turn off but it didnt, it went away after.

My cousin said it could be a bad spark plug as he said he had a problem like that before but we are not sure as we know nothing about cars.

I would be grateful if you can help me and advice what could be the problem. I hope theres nothing wrong with the engine :s cause its a really nice car.

waiting for your reply :)

maybe you could have some problems with the fuel pump? It's just an idea, obviously I'm not an expert so I can't be sure of this... maybe someone else can give you better suggestions

i think it may be a spark plug mate, it happened on my mums focus.

it could also be faultly ignition leads.

or maybe there is sme condesation thats got down were the spark plugs go.

spray the ignition leads and take the caps off the plugs and give them a quick spray with wd40.

may help.

cheers

couple of simple things, have u actually taken out the spark plugs and checked them? also have u checked the spark plug leads arnt loose? i had a similar problem to this and it was a loose spark plug...... not saying urs will be tho.

unless its something like a sensor like a speed sensor or something........
