afternoon guys.... everyone looking forward to xmas??

this morning was the first time i've had to reverse then use the brake pedal in this car....

anyways, when breaking there was this loud sort of griding / rubbing sound. not the quiet little sort of hiss you hear when the ac is off, stereo is off, windows wound up sound. this was loud.

has this happened to anybody else?

Hiya Mate,

Yeah I had that problem just last week, at first I thought I had a stone grinding on the brake disc but after a quick inspection, I couldnt notice anything there. It has only done it once on me and to stop the noise I reversed quickly and then slammed on. Worked for me :)

My mate was outside the car when I was reversing and he said it was really loud from outside as well. As it hasnt happened since I am not that worried really.

Has it happened to you more than once?

Ben

this is the first morning it happened. I reversed to get out of a parking space. Got to work, and the noise was still there while reversing.

I'l try again when I get home... you think i should be worried?

i've also noticed a sort of 'clicking' sound when accelerating from standstill or accelerating slowly, shifting into second, then accelerating normally, the clicking sound is there again. Do you think this has something to do with the clutch pedal?

Hiya Mate,

Check your Brake discs when you finish work just to make sure there are no stones or twigs that are catching. I have been driving a couple of times and heard a terrible noise but it has just turned out to be a stone grinding on the disc. Check your pads because one could of worn down or even snapped (it happens)

As far as the clicking is concerned that could be the heater or the air con. When I start mine up it always clicks a few times when its cold but its always the aircon. Sounds loud when it happens but I wouldnt worry about it, doesnt sound like its the gearbox.

The Polo GTI gearboxes usually are at their best when they have warmed up, mines abit sticky when started from cold.

i didn't mean a continuous clicking... i meant a single click... as if something is catching (hope that makes sense) I dont feel as if there is something catching but there is this click

Not too sure about the clicking, could be something simple like the clutch pedal like you said. Might be worth going through the gears when the car is stationary and see if it clicks then.
I imagine it would do it in every gear if it was clutch though.

the noise was back yesterday when reversing into a space. It hasn't been all week and then all of a sudden yesterday. I think i'm going to change the discs and pads all round during my time off.

on another note, when driving home the other night, the car again seemed to hesitate... this happened to anybody else?

found out what the clicking noise was. The engine mounting bolts were loose. F knows how they got loose and the noise from the brakes is the calipers
