Engine Speed Sensor Or Camshaft Position Sensor

Hi All

I have recently been having a lot of trouble with my W reg 1.6 Polo. (bit of a weird engine - AKL code)

It started a couple of weeks ago when it died on me. I had the car recovered and when i tried to start it the next night it started fine. I let it warm up for 15 mins and still no problems so i took it for a drive upon which it cut out again.

Ever since then it has run really rough. It sounds like it is running on two or three cylinders and will only run for so long before it cuts out even with a bit of throttle. I have already changed the plugs, leads and coil pack with no change.

Incidentally I changed the leads because one of them was open circuit but as this did not fix the problem i am assuming that i must have broken the old lead when i took it off to test it.

There are no warning lights on at all but I have just got a VAGCOM lead and keep getting three errors.

1. Engine Speed Sensor
2. Camshaft Position Sensor
3. Ignition Output 2

I spoke to a VW tech and he suggested changing the engine speed sensor but this comes in a £74 +VAT.

Any pearls of wisdom before i splash out would be gratefully received.

Cheers

The only thing i can suggest before taking it anywhere, is to check the wiring the these sensors. Especially the crank position sensor. a lose connection is an easy fix before u spend any money. otherwise i cant think of anything else it may be apart from ECU issues.

Mine used to read 'missing speed signal' which must be related to the engine speed sensor not working properly. Anyway, its also related to 'erratic revs' which you may look up as sometimes that will happen if the car doesn't stall.
