Hi Guys,

I Currently have an 05 Polo Twist, 1.2litre-3Cylinder I think ( Run-Around ).

Today whilst Driving the car an engine management light appeared on the dash, What followed
was the car started to Jerk Extremely & would not pick up any speed, Even with my foot nailed to the floor.

Before this happened when I used to take off in 1st gear the engine used to 'Pink' &
Also when started from cold in the morning, used to excessive idle up and down pretty violently around
3,000 Rpm.

I put this down to idle control and poss the engine needing excessive revs to take off ( Pinking )

Just wondering if these symtoms could poss be related & also what the problem could be with my Engine

Is the light flashing or lit all the time?

Same problem i had about 3weeks ago with my 03 plate polo, 99% i think its one of your coils as the problem was the same with mine and once AA came out it was the 3rd coil that needed replacing, around £40.

Very likely to be the coils that are at fault here take it in to vw and they will run a test on it to be sure, if it is not that then it could be the ecu at fault and needs to be restored to original spec again. Put it this way the engine IS NOT TERMINAL so don't worry easily fixed just a pain in the ass when it happens.
I would check all of the wires take each one of and clean and put back on also check the earth conections are intact.

I'd also think that a coil has packed up. One thing here, have you had this car from new (that bit should not be too important!) and has it always serviced at the correct time by VW? If so then if its a faulty coil I think that VW should replace it FOC - I think that I've read somewhere that these parts, when fitted to the car originally, are meant to carry a 4 or 5 year warranty - but you would need to clarify this with VW UK at M-K before trying to get the dealer to change it F.O.C. One final thing, if you do get the okay from VW UK, then remember to get the name of the person that gave you this info and possibly a referance number. VAG have had a big problem with quite a lot of coils - and I think that it was due to them or their supplier moving the manufacturing base to a "cheaper" country!!! So they are or should be reasonably okay with stumping up - in which case they might change all three coils, if you end up paying for them, just get the faulty one changed - and look on ebay for a spare to keep handy. On the other hand, if you think that your car's coils are out of warranty, why not let your breakdown service buy the new coil with their trade discount and fit it free for you!

Edit, I think if you check the TPS site (VAG's independant trade supplier of VAG parts to the nonVAG trade), you might find that they have a special deal on them right now!!

sometimes my car just wont start n a few time the engine management comes on or sumtimes it dusnt start had to wait like a hour one time and tried again it startd the revs went to 3000rpm idled for about 5 seconds then the revs just went down and the car stalled tried age it startd and i decided to quikly tryn n drive n then after a bit it gos normal i really dono what it is :s

therefore y i was thinking maybe the sme problem :s

I would expect coil failure to be permanent and not intermittant as the insulation tends to crack and the HT side arcs and burns a bit so it just gets worse very quickly and permanently. I keep suggesting that people buy a Gendan VAG scan tool for £40 delivered as this bit of kit should take the guessing out of engine management problems - and is easy to use. I bought one of these to have in the car "just in case", while having VCDS at home for serious stuff.
