Hi Guys,
New To This forum and thought u guys seemed the experts when it comes to polo's

i just got rid of my 54 plate clio for a 05 polo, very nice.

i had recently brought a stereo from halfords, its just a normal size head unit, pioneer 50UB or someting, £100

very nice sounds, hopefully its gona work in the polo, where my questions come in

the thing is that ive got a cassette player with radio controls ontop of a cd-player underneath.
so it effectively takes up two spaces as if u could fit two headunits in.
i went to halfords and by the looks of things i needed a fascia plate which they supplied me with

thats the fascia that halfords supplied me with and also a harness for the pioneer so it looks like im all set to go,
i think i can just make the forks out of cut up credit cards as i read somewhere on here that it works.

now, here is the question, the cubby hole is going to go at the bottom right? not at the top.
and in order to fit this fascia to make it a single din with a cubby hole, will i need to take the dashboard trim off around the radio?
or will it just fit on and the screws are already there? do i have to remove anything other than the two old headunits?

could someone make me a guide here of what i need to do and what i should expect, im going to have a crack at it in the next few days

First of all, welcome

May I dare say, if that fascia malarky thing they sold you looks exactly like that, it will NOT fit. To me, it looks like one which would fit in cars like a Mk5 Golf, B6 Passat, etc.

For the 9n/9n3 polo, you don't need a wiring harness (I'm assuming yours is a 9n, ie two round headlights...the facelift 9n3 requires a wiring adapter) nor a fascia adapter. All you need is the VW OEM DIN cubby box, which you may as well get second hand...like this

These cost about £25 - 30 from VW and I never saw the point in buying new.

You can fit the stereo either at the top or the bottom...makes no difference...the cubby box is installed above or below the HU depending on your preference. Just insert the cage which came with the HU...the HU will have also come with a wiring harness which will plug straight into the factory loom. Being pioneer, you should be able to swap the red and yellow cables around on this harness if it's anything like the harness my Pioneer came with. This ensures the HU retains eq, radio stations, etc in memory when you remove the key as the VW loom has the permanent and live +12V cables reversed.

The stock VW Beta/Gamma has an aerial booster circuit built in, whereas aftermarket HUs don't. Once all wired up, test the HU and that it retains its settings and then push it into the cage firmly till it clicks, et voila

Got a link to this HU you bought? If you haven't opened it, you may be able to get it cheaper online (or an even better HU for te price). Halfords isn't really the best place to be buying car audio from

and i dont know about the cage thing, all i did with the clio is stick the forks in, pull it out, put a black rubber thing from the back of the clio radio onto the back of the new radio and pushed it in firmly to stop it slidding out, i have no idea about these cages or whatever. did it come with one surrounding it or someting? also, i dont need an adapter? so i should be fine with that wire that comes with the pioneer no this £15 one they threw at me?

its a polo 9n i think, it was bought in 05, and it has the two rounded headlights.

i think ill go buy that adapter to make the signal stronger and as for the cubby hole,
could u find me a site thats safe to buy a new one, i just rather do that than faf around with paypal and ebay.

Hi,

Can't say I'm familiar with that HU, I'll look into it tomorrow. Right...first of all, get one of the cubby boxes I told you about. Just pop into your nearest VW dealer and ask at the parts department. You'll also want some removal keys for the stock HU...not heard of the credit card thing you were on about earlier, but it can't be too hard to make some keys I suppose...

Push the keys into the two slots at the side and the head unit should pop out. Push the keys towards the edge of the HU and pull towards you and the HU will pop out. Remove the wiring harness, aerial connection, etc from the back. Similarly, do the same with the CD playesr. Now, install the cubby box where the CD player was...it can only go in one way, so if it doesn't fit it's upside down. The Pioneer should come with a cage. Slot that in above the cubby box. There are tabs at the front edge of the cage, push these in to secure the cage...it sounds weird, but you'll se what I mean when you do it

Now, a wiring harness will be supplied with the new HU. Connect the corresponding end to the factory loom and the other end to the HU. On this loom, you'll be able to swap the yellow and red cables around (again, will become obvious when you see it yourself). Do this. Connect an aerial booster to the factory aerial connector and the other end to the HU. There will be a blue wire on this booster which needs to be conncted to the blue remote connector on the pioneed loom. Test that it works and turns off when you remove the key, and also that it retains eq and radio station settings. Then, push into the opening above the cubby box and it should click into place and be locked into the cage. If it doesn't slot in at first, try pushing the wires in further...there's not a lot of room in these polos behind the radio and it took me a few attempts on my install.
