A question for those in the know. I run a 1.4tdi with std engine nothing touched as yet other than the oil and general service items. I am wanting to start modifying this a bit and plan a stage 1 remap which I believe will take me near 100bhp poss abit more. at a cost of 300 quid. before this should I start to change the air intake pipe to that of the bigger engined diesels ie the pd160. also would it be advisable to change the turbo intake pipes to that of better quality or should I leave alone? Thanks in anticipation of your answers.

They say every little helps...obviously the PD160 intake will help it breathe that little bit better, I've heard that it's not worth it on the 1.4 TDi, with it costing £60 new. No idea regarding turbo pipes, but I do plan on replacing all the vacuum hoses (connected to the valve block on top of the OSF suspension stut) as preventative maitainence as a couple of 1.4 TDis on here have suffered fom split hoses. I Who are you getting it remapped by?

Sorry I haven't been able to get back to you with the answer to your question asI have been in hospital for an operation on my eye, well the skin around it, last of three operations so I hope that this will be it finished.

The company is called custom code and it looks as thoughthere is a lot to gain with stage one giving out 110 bhp just by a remap.

i have a custom code remap, other than a blown boost pipe all has been well.
i have the PD160 air intake under my stairs but never fitted it so cannot comment on that.
i have the lower half of my airbox removed though with a 2.5" pipe going to the lower grill, this makes it sound more like a tractor until full warmed up but when you boot it i think and others have commented on the noise been a bit better, also gets ALOT of air to the air box.
since i did this it does seem a bit more responsive but a heck of a job to do for minimal gains.

mine was rolling roaded at 106.8 or 108.6bhp and compared to the 75bhp standard it feels alot better.

i also got a VRS air filter as it's just as good as a KnN or what ever lol and cheaper

You have this upgrade, can you let me know how responsive the difference is ie times for acceleration 0-60 and the 50 -80 times would be of great help, personally I am looking for something that won't kill my tyres but will be better for overtaking and if required getting out of trouble if anything is about to happen whilst out on the road ie the mr magoo that swings lane to lane when you are looking to pass by. Also does it make any difference to the fuel consumption? I have upgarded everything else on the car so the brakes and suspension etc are well up to the job they will be asked to do.

i don't have any times for 0-60 or anything.
if your plodding along at 70-75 and you put your foot down you can be at 100 easily before you know it.

fuel consumption is better, obviously not when your getting foot happy though lol.

I too have a custom code remap, in conjunction with a green cotton filter. Never got it on the rollers, But I'd guess it's around the 107ish BHP mark. It felt much more responsive after the remap...now obviously I'm used to it, so it doesn't feel that fast. But it's a lot less effort to overtake. MPG is slightly up when driving conservatively. I can't comment on how much the filer helps, as it was installed at the same time the remap was done. However, if you decide to get a filter, don't get a K&N one as they are reknowned for killing MAFs on TDis.
