Gearbox repair warranty question

Hello, I had my gearbox repaired at a local garage in October 2008. For about a month I have noticed a slight whine from the gearbox, a similar noise i was hearing before i got it repaired (although less severe, and less loud). I have no doubt this whine will get worse in time and i will have to repair it again.

I have covered 7800 miles in 9 months since the repair, the warranty offered was 12 months, or 12,000 miles, So the gearbox is around 2/3 through its warranty peroid. I am starting to think about taking it back under warranty. This is a difficult situation because I want it to be justified, I want the gearbox to require a valid repair without cheating the guy at the garage. But i also dont want him to say "everythings fine, go away" when clearly it is not fine. I also dont want to wait up until 1 month or 1k miles before the warranty runs out, then try to renew it, because this would suggest im just planning to rolling renew my warranty every year just for the sake of it.

I want a fair warranty repair, where no partys feel scammed.

After some thought I planned to talk to the garage and explain everything i have wrote here.

Any suggestions, ideas or previous experiences with similar problems would be welcome.

Thanks.

Had sort of similar mate, bought the car from a nice guy local to me, no problems with the warranty transferring over to me then around 15 months since the box went in (only around 10k later) I was getting some problems, went straight to the company, and in a nice but firm way made them look at it, for free, as, yes the warranty may have ran out but when paying £1000 for an item that is 'as good as new' you at least expect it to last another 60k like the first box.

For them spending an hour of their time or two at little cost to them they have now got somebody who will recommend them to others who ever face difficulties, you always read about cases where people buy tvs and get free replacements after the warranty has expired, all to do with an item not achieving what is was sold to do so, and being fit for purpose.

I'd pop in and let them know, after all they can 'fix' whatever problem there is now, rather than more damage being caused by the damage increasing and damaging other parts.

Yep I'd definitely take it in, something clearly isn't right.

If you just left it you'd get the raw end of the deal, a stuffed 'box and an expired warranty!

yes no point messing around, a warranty is there for a reason...even if it breaks on the last day

I took it down to the garage and told him my concerns. He said basically the same as you guys are saying, as soon as you think theres a problem, bring it down here so we can sort it fast and that gearboxes can sometimes go bad real fast. We went for a ride in it, but for some reason it wasnt making the noise as much as i have heard it do before, maybe because the oil was already warm or something. We both agreed we didnt hear much sound and that it doesnt need bringing in yet. He assured me that he will stand by his warranty and if i want i can bring it down a week before the warranty ends to see if it needs doing.

Overall i am happy with the outcome.
