Radio/Cassette Face Plate

Hi there.
I'm looking to buy an ORIGINAL Radio/Cassette face (controls) plate OR whole unit for a 1999 polo.
I heard the radios become bricked if they are disconnected from the battery and need a code to reuse them. I only have the main unit but no face plate and the hope is I buy a face plate and the radio will work but if I buy a face plate and the radio is bricked... waste of cash I assume? Equally, would a different face plate to the original box brick it? Hmm... maybe I need to buy a whole new unit.
Advice appreciated, please post up if you have anything to help me with my conundrum. Thanks in advance,
