I spoke to someone earlier at work who bought a 100bhp 1.4 9n. They tried to take it back because it was averaging under 30mpg. The dealer showed them the sales brochure where it says 31.4mpg urban and told them they chose the engine and they are stuck with it.

They took it to a new dealer in cardiff who have offered them their 16v 100bhp + £1000 in exchange for a new FSI. Their car only has 900 miles on it.

I've told them to take the car to the new dealers for a check up incase there is anything wrong with it.

Maybe ask if they'll give them the same offer at 1500 miles and try it out for a few hundred more miles??

They feel like it's their fault and they'll never get anywhere complaining to vw. For a dealer I think it's quite a generous offer, seeing as they wouldn't make anything on it and they never sold it to them in the first place. The cars are Identical spec except the engine.

30mpg though???? ughh.

What would you do???

VW neither dealer seem to think their is a problem with the car.
I know it's only done 900 miles but at least half of this is on the motorway, unless they've been driving @ 100 everywhere, although they say they've been taking it easy on the new engine.

They have also tried fuling up with optimax incase there was a dodgy petrol station, so trying a different type of fuel.

That does seem odd - I drive mine all the time on the motorway at 80 and it returns 34mpg on a bad day. something does seem odd, like there is a manufacturing issue.

Does it say "30 mpg" on the clock, or are they trying to work it out with a calculator?

p.s. mine is a mkiv but is there much difference?

They are using the onboard computer. I'd imagine the 9n is quite a bit heavier but still does sound like something wrong.

Any one with a 9n 16v100?

I have not had a 9n, but my previous car was based on the same platform and had the 100bhp 1.4 16v engine (Yes Nelson it was a Skoda just so you know). In my experience I regularly got around 37- 40mpg to and from work (a variety of roads and speeds) and had even managed 50mpg a few times, so apart from a little difference due to different gearing it should be the same. Get it seen by a dealer before you do anything.

Either there is something seriously wrong with your car, or you drive like your in an Episode of the Sweeney

i have no idea whats wrong, its been like that from when i got it, do u think vw could do much for me?

Are you sure your not just driving it too hard? If you want 45-50mpg you need to drive like an old granny to get the results.

Don't know if VW could help, I don't know whats wrong with the car

you have to shift up early, no high revs, brake gently, accelerate gently, in order to get near to manufacturer's MPG!!

I think they have decided to go with the replacement car.

He drove it most of the day while the 16v was being checked out (No fault found) and were getting 40-50 mpg compared to the 20-30 he was getting before.

He's going to keep the FSI for another day then decide by the weekend.

I told him he can always get it chipped for £400

Actually I think the MPG will improve.

Yep, as soon as I've had some fun driving it i'll be back on the forums to let you know!

I think they should get the FSI... If nothing else, at least it's a newer car, and the engine's got the latest technology.

But they'll have to use the dearer Super Unleaded fuel.
