How to check cambelt is working ok??

Hey up lads,

Basically as the title says, I want to know how you check to see if your cambelt(s) are working ok??

I've had an on going problem with my GTi and I'm 99.9999999999% certain that it's got something to do with my cambelt timing! Bearing this in mind though, I had my cambelt changed at 60k (now on 75k) using the cambelt kit supplied by VW, however it wasn't fitted by VW. I've just changed my camshaft sensor too - But VAG-COM is still bringing up the same code ''17748 - Camshaft Position Sensor (G40) / Engine Speed Sensor (G28): Incor. Correlation'' So, can it be my cambelt that is the problem??

Anyone shed any light to what the problem is with my german piece of crap?!

I'm not sure how you test for timing etc, but you can access the belts to test torsion etc by removing their cover, located left of the rocker cover when you look at it.

The cambelt timing can be checked using vag com by checking the cam advance angles are within a certain range :P unless you have access to it, you wont be able to check it with ease

The only other way to do it, is to check all the timing marks line up on the tensioners with the block and the head

Umm, I would say it's cracked, as in I never paid for it, but it does say it's the registered version - No hayes manual, need to buy one really. I do know where the cam cover is etc. But haven't really looked to see if any markings match up.. Suppose I could just have a deek about see if I can find anything wrong?

pm'd you emma. Its not cam timing - its valve timing but as I said in my pm, hopefully it wont come to this.
