Cutting out?

Post by SlimDubs »

Hi guys, I'm new to the forum, I posted this in 'common faults' and was told I'd be better off putting it as a new topic for some better answers.
Hopefully someone can help me!

I've owned my N reg mk4 1.4cl for around 2 months, it's done 92000 miles.
There seems to be a problem when I'm slowing down and changing down gears.
When I put the clutch in the revs completely drop and my engine cuts out leaving me with my dash lights on and me rolling around corners or putting it into a lower gear and bump starting it or turning my key and starting it again.

Any ideas why this is happening guys?
The bloke that a bought it from had a new distributor fitted recently as there are receipts for this, and new battery by the looks of things.

I've been told to clean the throttle body with degreaser or WD40 so I'll give that a go!?

i had the exact same problem that you have now, its the throttle body as when you have it in gear or when accelarating your putting the fuel through the engine basically and when in neutral, the engine tries to put the fuel through by itself and doesnt know how much to put through so decides not to work.

so yeah you need a new throttle body, its best to get a brand new one to be honest as you dont know how long a 2nd hand one will last. i got a brand new one plus labour at a specialists for 300. it will most likely be cheaper everywhere elseas i went to an expensive place.

i had this problem with mine but its fine now, wat i did was take off the throttle body and gave it a good clean was really badly oiled up, put throttle body back on and it would not run right if u do this iv been told u need to get a new seal for the throttle body to sit back down on and also u need to reset the throttle body using vagcom or other comp that can reset ur ecu and tb. i had 2 or 3 atemps at reseting then it worked fine again after a good blast up the road this wat worked for me altheo i have a dif engine code so may be different for u hope u get it sorted soon

Sounds like it's definately the throttle body then.
Is there any way I can give it a clean with out taking it off? will see if that helps then resort to taking it off :| if I need to.
Will I ever be able to get it sorted enough to not need a new one? as the car was a steal at £300 n don't wanna go throwing all my money at it (apart from some coilovers asap )
cheers guys!

Got a new battery on Monday as mine randomly died on Friday even though I didn't leave anything on over night.
The guy that tested it, said it was f****d.
It's weird coz since I've had the new one fitted the car hasn't cut out at all. Not once.
Could this have been the problem rather than the throttle body?

best thing to do first of all before chucking money to at, buy some carb cleaner from halfords, dave edwards, lds etc...take off the air box...arm yourself with an old toothbrush, and go nuts, dont worry, the carb cleaner wont cause any problems if you spray alot!:) hope it helps

Had the same problem, just bought car cleaner for £5 from halfords and sprayed this down the TB, took all of 5 mins and 6 months later is still fine
