Gearbox question ?

I was driving around last night and then suddenly i started to hear a rattling noise.

When the power is on, you cannot hear anything, but when you dip the clutch i can hear a rattling noise (quite loud), you can also feel the rattling through the gear stick.

I dont think it is the clutch because it makes no noise at stand still, only when the car is in motion, however the clutch is extremely heavy and is similar to pressing down on a brick.

I dont know if the box just needs oil and the noise i am hearing is due to a dry gearbox or if the box needs replacing.

I dont think the box or clutch have been replaced before as there is no documents to prove this.

The car is on 97.5k

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If the clutch has suddenly gone heavy I would suggest the release bearing or release bearing slider have fallen appart....

Only course of action is (assuming you have checked the brakes and driveshafts for "oddness") Is to remove the gearbox, have it inspected/rebuilt if needed.... and then refit with new clutch.... 100,000 miles from a box is good going!

I have found a vw specialist that have said they will do the box and clutch for no more than £725

Will be cheaper if its just bearing in the box that need replacing.

This sound about right ???

Sounds reasonable... but it depends if you can trust them... you DO NOT WANT a different recondition box...

you want YOUR BOX taken out of the car and rebuilt if needed.... a lot of people have problems with unknown reconditioned boxes.... If you get yours rebuilt you will atleast know the score!

I think I paid about £430 for my gearbox to be fully stripped and rebuilt with new bearings and seals...

I took it out of the car myself... and then fitted a new clutch kit (about £85 I think).... getting the gearbox/clutch out isnt that hard, but it can be a fiddle if you dont know what your doing...

yeah, i havent got a clue when it comes to clutches and gearboxes.

They will be re-conditioning my box, they want it for 4-5 days so they can take the box apart locate the broken parts and replace them.

I dropped it off to the garage this morning, within an hour they had rang me back and said it was the bearings in the box that have gone and that i had made the right choice to get it there without too much driving on it. He then went on to say as long as the casing isnt damaged, i will be looking at around £650 to recondition the box and fit a new clutch.

I have been told today that the diff has also broken, do you think this would be included in his price, if not any ideas on how much they are likely to cost ???

Not happy at the moment, i have been told that 2 of the parts that have broken in the gearbox are on back order from VW until 5th January 2010 meaning i am without a car for the next few weeks :(

The part numbers of the two parts are:

085498081

and

085311145P

Anybody know where i could get these from apart from VW ?

i wouldnt say you could get parts like that from anywhere but VW - gearboxes are very specialist items, and its important to use original parts for the quality. Back orders at VW often come quicker than they say so give it a chance!

For prices like that they better be making a top job of it! I should imagin that price you were quoted includes diff bearings? And new fitted Clutch yes?

I think the Diff bearings in mine are knackered on mine at the moment. I shall be taking her to bits in a few weeks to check it out.

Yer, a complete overhaul of the box basically and a new clutch.

Should hopefully be getting it back today after VW delivered the parts (even though they said they were on back order)

Fingers crossed i should be in the polo over christmas.

Will the clutch and box need "bedding" in ?

I am slightly worried about driving it on the icy roads if it needs bedding in.

Just dont labour the box at low revs - ie no lower than 1500RPM in any gear for the first 1000 miles

knew they'd be in quicker :)

Should hopefully get it back tomorrow, apparently VW sent the wrong bearings but the new ones are on the way.

My gearbox specialist used uprated bearings in mine, same price as original bearings too :D
