Hi guys,

since it's quite slippery on the roads at the moment (which isn't a big surprise during winter) I've noticed that my ABS doesn't entirely work as it should. It breaks but as soon as it activates I can feel the break pedal kind of pushing back on my leg. Now I know how ABS works and that this isn't extraordinary, but it pushes back really hard, so that my whole leg moves back and it's quite loud as well. Does anyone know what might be causing such a strange behavour? could it be a broken ABS sensor which is used to count the number of wheel resolutions?

I'd guess that this is okay, my B5 Passat and VX Cav GSI, as well as my wife's 9N Polo all do/did this, are you sure that the "kick back" of the pedal is not just the effect you feel when the ABS module isolates the pedal side of the fluid system while running the high pressure pump and activating the individual wheel fluid lines.

BTW, if you had a normal ABS system parts failure, then the system would get disables and you would get a warning light and revert to non ABS braking (all these ABS systems run a self test shortly after you start up and move off.

As per the other two replies this is exactly as you should expect particularily with the current state of the roads just drive a bit slower and brake less harse and allow more distant to stop and you will not get the symptoms that you have described unless the brakes sense no slowing and that my friend is when the abs kicks in and saves your ass. A fantastic inventionone I had to take full use of with the first nightof the snow 3 inches deep and the roundabout coming up ..not travelling fast but fast enough for the abs to show its selve managed to steer around the roundabout, however the car behind me didn't and hit the roundabout. Lucky white heather. No body hurt just the guys pride and his pocket for the repairs.
