on the drive home today, felt the car jerk then all of a sudden its started making whining noises, was only 2 mins away from home when it happened so just parked it up at the min

wonder if its the gear box? or something else?

it was driving okay i think - maybe reduced power a little?

stops making the noise when its in neutral

does it go away when the clutch is depressed or is it there all the time?

i knocked it in to neutral, an it doesnt make a noise, havent tried it with clutch down yet - its had a new clutch bout 1-2000 miles ago

mine has a very slight wine after i had a new gear box, its most audible when under engine breaking. no idea what it is.

this whine is very loud, gona go garage in the morning an get it checked out...

I have a slight whine but only in third, other than that no problems so I'm not concerned

This may sound a little out of place but there is a slim chance is could be the cambelt tensioners.
When mine went early last year it started to make a very distinctive whining sound which at the time I thought might of been the power steering but it turned out to be the tensioners.

Its very unlikely that it will be your tensioners but I wouldnt rule it out either

the car drives ok, goes in an out of gear fine, but makes the noise whilst in gear an even whilst in neutral!

took it to garage, he said its deffo the gearbox!

any ideas on a cheap place in nottingham!!?!

gearbox = costly, you're never going to get it done cheap, if you do it'll probably be s**t.

true, booked in for monday morning to get checked, gonna see how it goes!

sounds like diff bearings .... mine had the same problem, and had to have a full box rebuild

how much that set u back mate?
mines goin in tomorrow morning, if i got a rough price in my head then i know hes not ripping me off lol

Box rebuild was about 400ish from memory plus labour

what you reckon around 600ish all in??
