My power steering light is on, the power steering is not working at all, the steering is heavy

I’ve not had a chance to do a diagnostic test on it as its a damaged car in a body shop and is still awaiting parts, anyone got any idea what it could be?

Any help much appreciated, thanks

ive had this problem on damaged cars before.

its either the fuse on the car battery

or if your power steering pump has been hit in the accident it can be that

after fixing either of these you have to have it reset for it to work again.

Is the alternator working correctly? With the ignition on (engine not started) does the battery warning lamp glow or not? If it's not your alternator sense wire has snapped near the connector (just in front of the gearbox)...this problem only appears to affect diesels, probably due to increased vibrations. To confirm, give it the beans to 3.5k RPM for a sec and if the power steering starts working you've found your problem. It's a longshot and your problem may be elsewhere, but if it is the sense wire it's a simple fix. I found this out myself when I once left my car locked up for 5 weeks whilst on holiday. Started first time, but no PAS until revved a bit.

I had this problem, had to replace the powersteering pump because some water got onto terminals and with age it oxidised and caused the pump to break. It was a very costly thing to have replaced at VW

URGENT HELP REQUIRED:

Right the bodywork on the car is finished. There are two problems now one of which is the power steering (power steering light on and no power steeering).

I am going to have a look at the car tomorrow to see if I can get the power steering working or to see what the problem is.

I need help with what fuses to look at, as I don’t have the owner’s handbook I don’t know. So if anyone knows please could you let me know as soon as possible.

Also what else do I need to look for, what checks other than the ones mentioned above can I do. Are there any other connectors or resistors or other things I need to check.

Any help is greatly appreciated, thanks in advance

i have just been told that there is no electrical power going through the power steering, if this helps at all.

mine did the same i hit a curb quite hard. (not my fault woman pulled out on me) due to the impact the car turns off the power steering pump to avoid further damage. plug it in on diag and just erase the fault codes and it will be fine. well mine was anyway.
