MrP's GTI - Weekend of fail...

Hey everyone!

Just got myself a 6N2 GTI, swapped it for a mk3 GT with cash his way, I just fancied something newer and more comfortable. I absolutely love it! It's really good condition and drives spot on. Has a few niggles but nothing major, the throttle pedal has massive amounts of play in it, I've looked at the mech and it seems either the cable or plate sector has worn so got some ordered from VW along with some Headlight protectors! Also it seems the electric windows have just lost there one touch function, no idea why!? But I see these as small issues on such a nice car.. Anyway, I'll let the pics do the talking...

That is red.. Good eye! Its a golf US spec 25th anniversary badge, just ordered one more for the rear to match, The big VW badge has been sprayed red too but it's not to my taste so I'm thinking all black or re-new with a chrome one. Still un-decided.

No major plans as yet, just sorting out all the little things first like missing grommets and fixings, cleaning her up loads and getting her in the bodyshop to remove any marks, getting the arches rolled before that though so some wider wheels can be fitted at some point.

I've got on order so far: headlight protectors, aerial seal, stubby aerial, parts to fix the loose throttle, new red trim for the grill and also new HT leads as one has split and is being held by electrical tape to stop it shorting. Trying to buy OEM VAG things where possible.

Future buys are new speakers all around with a new head unit, probably going alpine. Need to repaint the callipers and cam cover as they are starting to flake, BMC air filter and a 4-2-1 manifold then who knows!

Right.. Been a busy boy on the GTI sorting out all the little niggles.

First things first, as some of you may know one of my mates drank too much, got a little over excited and jumped on my car causing £200 of damage! Luckily he manned up and paid for the repair which was done by DentvanishLTD in Leeds, I highly recommend these guys, they came and fixed it within 48hrs of contact, two guys came out and spent a good few hours going over the car.. the pictures speak for themselves how well they sorted the repair..

I also have a hazy nearside headlight...

Image

Tried tackling this with farecla g3 and Displex...

Image
Image

Looking better but I'm still not happy with the outcome.. Think I'm going to try and source new headlight lenses and swap them over.. Watch this space...

Image

Then decided to get myself down to my local VW dealership to get some headlight protectors as I didn't want to cause any more damage to the headlight (since headlights are about £400 a piece from VW, and that's just for the casing!)

Oh and I know the with/without is the wrong way round.. Can't be bother to change it

Image

Then proceeded to repair my aerial gasket as mine had just disappeared... At the same time I put on a VW Sharon stubby aerial:

Image
Image

At the same time as buying the headlight protectors I also bought the plastic runner which sits in between the HT leads as mine was missing (thanks alexpekins for the part number :D )

Image
Image

Also bought a BMC CDA to replace the above Pipercross induction kit as I've read many good reports... Absolutely love it, it's not as loud or throaty as the Pipercross, but sounds more sporty and genuine. Thanks to MouseGTI for his superb guide on how to fit the induction hose 8)

Image

Had an issue with rubbing on the engine cover so glued some old car carpet to the suspect area's.. It's been cleaned up loads, I'll update the picture soon..

Image

Finally fitted a new Alpine stereo. It's a great head unit, but not to my taste, a little overkill for my needs so it's getting sold and will be replaced with a good spec Alpine unit without the touch screen!

Image
Image

Fitted a 25th Anniversary GTI badge to the rear (so it matches the one on the front which was fitted by the last owner)

Image

Fitted a new red band around the grill as the old one was faded badly:

New:

And that's it so far...

I have a few plans and a to do list, mainly:

Fix the accelerator pedal as it seems to sit too low and according to VAGCOM it's only opening 78 degrees! Not good... I have all the necessary parts on order from VW, which are on back order so I'm guessing I'm not the only one with this issue..

Give it a oil change as the service lights just come on, I will give it a mini service at the same time (plugs, filters etc)

Fit new HT leads as ones split, it's got electrical tape at the moment and it works fine so it's in now rush..

Change the fuel filter as it's the original one according to the service history!

Fit new interior door handles and electric window switches as the drivers side passenger window switches one touch feature is temperamental.

Paint the rocker cover again as it's looking tired along with tidying the entire bay as it's filth

Paint the callipers red as they have faded loads :(

Got loads more to do but all these are on top of the list...

Pedal issues:

Right, as you can see, From left to right:

Image

Left: Normal resting position when in use

Middle, when pulled up it rests here, but with the slightest press it will move down further again with no affect on the throttle (worn bush me thinks?)

Right, fully pulled and held.

What's peoples opinions on this?

EDIT: Oh and according to VAGCOM the throttle is only opening 78 degrees, so the throttle is not opening by 12%, so something must be worn/broke.

All the accelerator pedals pull forward bud, its just part of the design. When its sitting 'home' is it inline with the other pedals

My accelorater pedal looks exactly like that picture when it is in its home position (if by home you mean where it sits naturally when its been depressed), i.e lower than the brake and clutch pedals.

p.s hope im not hijacking the thread

Nice progress. I'd get a machine polisher on your lights before considering buying new ones though!
