hang on - 24mph over the limit?! either that's a typo or you've been lucky only getting 3 points!

From what a mate who somehow knows these things told me (ie maybe innaccurate )

limit up to 10% / 10% +2 dependant on area - might get a warning. Probably won't touch you.

from there on up to 15 over - fined, points likely but not guaranteed.

15 to 30 over - definate points and fine, perhaps prosecution if other circumstances involved (dangerous driving etc)

30 over - likely loss of license or other prosecution


So if it was just a bored copper catching you at 94mph on an empty motorway making up his OTE ( ) quota, you'll get away with just a moderate fine and 3 points. They drive too after all, and have to have some kind of motor affinity to take that job in the first place...

In Oxfordshire, apparently up to 5mph over the speed limit you get sent on a speeding awareness course. 5-10mph over the limit is 3 points and £60 fine. 10mph+ over the speed limit is 6 points and £1000 fine. obviously if your doing somehting like 30mph over the limit, they're going to have you licence away. So if you've been driving for less than two years, and you get caught doing 40mph in a 30 limit (as is quite easy to do when someone behind is tailgating you) you'd loose your licence (6 points) and probably have to sell your car (£1000 fine, I definately would).

I don't think they'd be to impressed if you were doing 24mph over the speed limit here, they're getting very tight about speeding.

Again, someone who was sent on an awareness course told me this - so could be inaccurate. I'm also not sure if this applies an motorways and dual carridgeways?

Getting ANYTHING for 5 or less mph over is just stupid, even having to go on a propagan... um... awareness course. You still lose evenings because of it!
Now IF it was an advanced drivers course instead, to up your awareness, skill, and ability to deal with situations and avoid accidents - fair play...

I must have got away pretty lightly then!! I was caught doing 50 in a 40 a few months ago. Just got a verbal warning!

Hmmm... You should come to Brasil then... The bas***ds in parliament have recently passed a law that forces police to warn drivers 400m in advance of a radar/speed camera. Which renders the (very few) cameral available pretty much useless.

Other recently passed laws state that people have the right to refuse breath-tests (and that cannot be used against them) and that you can only be fined by Police if they pull you up (so much for forbidding mobile phone use then).

So, as you can see, these MP's get re-elected by basically letting their constituency do whatever they want in the streets.

Last year, around 55,000 people died in Brazilian streets and roads.



P.S.: That's the official number which only takes into account those who die on the site of the accident. Independent estimates put the actual figure at around 90,000. In one year. So maybe policing isn't such a bad idea after all.
