Hi I’m having a bit of a problem with my gti
When on the motorway it sometimes judders and goes into limp mode, this has been getting worse recently and when I plug it into vagcom it says
16706 - Engine Speed Sensor (G28): No Signal
P0322 - 35-10 - - - Intermittent
But last week the car stalled at the lights and the camshaft sensor error also came up.
I’ve been checking the car every other day and the engine speed sensor error keeps coming back but I’ve not seen the camshaft sensor error again.
Now the question, is it worth changing the camshaft sensor or should I go straight for the engine speed sensor.
I know where the camshaft sensor is but I don’t know where the engine speed sensor is, can someone tell me where it is and has anyone got a picture of its location?
thanks
Camshaft sensor or engine speed sensor??
Re: Camshaft sensor or engine speed sensor??
Engine speed sensor IIRC is down on the crank pulley on the drivers side... its mounted on the oil pump casting.
Errors like this would suggest an earth/connectivity issue... I would trace the sensor back to the ECU checking and cleaning all the connections on the loom...
Heat can break down the copper conductors in the cables over time... which is annoying!

Re: Camshaft sensor or engine speed sensor??
Just checked the workshop manual
If its saying no signal, as dunc has said, its likely to be wiring fault. It would normally state implausible signal or faulty, rather than no signal
If you have a multimeter, check the voltage across pins 1 and 3 on the speed sensor plug. It should be a minimum of 4.5V

Re: Camshaft sensor or engine speed sensor??
thanks
i dont have a multimeter but ill trace the wiring and see what i can do
so is the speed sensor on the left side of the engine?
oh n when the camshaft signal appeared it said implausible signal, could the engine speed sensor cause that to appear by any chance?

Re: Camshaft sensor or engine speed sensor??
Strangley enough, my Vagcom also flared this up at me today:
Control Module Part Number: 036 906 033 D
Component and/or Version: 1.6l/4V SIMOS3 00HS3512
Software Coding: 00031
Work Shop Code: WSC 00788
Additional Info: WVWZZZ6NZ1Y158886 VWZ1Z0Y0990593
1 Fault Found:
16705 - Engine Speed Sensor (G28): Implausible Signal
P0321 - 35-10 - - - Intermittent
Also got my ABS fault:
Control Module Part Number: 6X0 907 379 C
Component and/or Version: ABS/EDS 30 IE CAN V004
Software Coding: 15603
Work Shop Code: WSC 00788
1 Fault Found:
01276 - ABS Hydraulic Pump (V64)
16-00 - Signal Outside Specifications
Any ideas? apart from the ABS fault which has been on and off for ages now the car isen't showing any symptoms of a faultly engine speed sensor?

Re: Camshaft sensor or engine speed sensor??
Clean the fuses on top of the battery, and check its voltage is above 12V
I had the engine speed sensor fault on a polo I was working on today. Replaced the battery and cleaned the fuses and the problem appears to be fixed.

Re: Camshaft sensor or engine speed sensor??
Any cleaning tips Mr Perkins? is it best to use solutions such as circuit cleaner? To be honest it seems the way to go, seeing as boths faults came up after i got that part of the engine bay slightly wet when cleaning...

Re: Camshaft sensor or engine speed sensor??
Engine speed sensor with that error means its dead. I have exactly the same with a customers polo atm, and its being replaced in the next few days. New sensor to trade is about £80 ish, so normally its more than that! Fitting requires the starter to be removed so not a quick in out job

And yes contact cleaner is good for cleaning it. The connector is located down just behind the thermostat housing. Its two connectors joined together
Re: Camshaft sensor or engine speed sensor??
had the same problem looked at vagcom and the same thing kept coming up engine speed sensor. so i had the crankshaft position sensr replaced and its been fine ever since
