Gearbox gone again!!!

The gearbox on my 1.4 16V is starting to make the loud grinding noise again for the 3rd time in under 2 years!! So i've decided to get the box overhauled this time with reinforced parts rather than getiing it refurbished. Does anyone know of any companies near Nottingham that overhaul gearboxes at a reasonable price?
Cheers.

Took the gearbox to get refurb'd today, and the guy said the box is completely useless and should look into getting a fully reconditioned box. I have fount a few places that sell reconditioned boxes which have strengthened pinion bearings and differential so are longer lasting but want £650 including fitting!
My local gearbox garage did mention that the GTI gearbox is a direct fit onto the 1.4 16V engines, but just have slight changes in gear ratios that may not be noticeable. Could anyone confirm this for me or would it be pointless in getting a GTI box.
Cheers.

from looking around mate the gearboxs in the 1.6s are not the most reliable at all, even if it did fit my opinion would be to go for a strengthened refurbed box!

My gearbox went a few years ago when i first owned my polo, i bought it back recently knowing some of the history hoping that would be one less thing to repair but it seems like it might not matter

I have no doubt the gearbox can be improved and made stronger but I think your best bet is to take it to a gearbox specialist to get a proper assesment. The GTI boxes are renound for going wrong because they can't really handle 125bhp being put through them.
Is your Polo the 1.4 16V 75bhp or the 100bhp model?
I think the 100bhp Polo's have the same ratio's but I could be wrong.
Ben,

Its not that they cant handle the BHP. Its the fact that the differential bearing links arent strong enough for heavy use, and shear apart. The easiest fix is to get them replaced with titanium bolts with lock nuts.

Are you still on your Original box Alex?
Mine is still going strong on the original box at 67K, just had the gearbox fluid changed too so it feels even better now.

I have the 1.4 16v "s" 60bhp and even that proved too much for the gearbox!

Cool
Your not too far off the landmark 100K then now, I think the engines are good for 200K if treated well.

Aye still going strong!. 500 miles then 5k oil changes will come into effect
Oh definately. A cared for engine will provide many thousands of miles before its last mile

Alex what fluid are you using in the box? Is it a 75w/90? And how much do these boxes need? (6N2 1.4 16v 75bhp)
Cheers

Good news, you've just gained another 15bhp if it's a 16v

Its genuine VW manual gearbox fluid bud. I think its a similar consistency, but it doesn't actually list it on the bottle. Off the top of my head im not sure...but ill find out!
