ABS Hydraulic Pump [intermittent]

Hi, I have a GTI on an X reg.

The other day (whilst my bf's G40 is in the garage) I took him to Oxford to pick up a brake conversion for his car. on the motorway my ABS light came up, and stayed on until the car was turned off for a little bit.
The next weekend we went on the motorway again to go pick up a sub for his car. Again the ABS light came on.
When we got home we popped round to a mates house who plugged in his computer as he has vag.com and the fault came up as 'ABS Hydraulic Pump Intermittent'
I've looked into buying the part -and even a second hand one is like £200+ on eBay. i dare not even try a scrappy as they seem to always ask me for more money then if i got the part brand new from VW. (...I imagine the price for the labor isnt going to be to plesant either.)
My boyfriend said not to worry to much and said he'd check the connections and stuff before i start spending money.
I found a Video on YouTube from a mechanic who said 'they can be quite a common fault on the polos' (but he was talking about a '02-03 plate' so i dunno if he means across all polos :S) ...but the main thing he said was it can often just be the fuses and bad connections ect.

I was wondering if this problem has come up for any of you guys? was it just do do with fuses? or was it the attual pump? and if so how much did it cost? and did u get the work done when it had attually broken, or just on the way out like mine.

I love my car and dont mind spending money on him but do you think i can hang on for a while before getting it done? or should i just bite the bullet?
i dont normally go on the motorway much. just tend to drive around locally. and the abs still works fine otherwise....granted it doesnt normally come on but in the recent rain and going over a pumpy batch in the raod his abs kicked in fine and all was good.

Ive got my MOT soon. im hoping it doesnt pop up on the test. (knowing my luck itll pack up altogether the day before  )

Take the yellow fuse out on the battery and sand the contacts. The problem should go away after that :)

I've also got the same problem. Could be a problem in the ABS pump which can be fixed - http://www.uk-polos.net/view ... 2081&hilit.

cheers you three :)
im gonna give the fuse thing a go first and hope all is ok. like i said i dont go on the motorway much so hopefully the problem wont arise again any time soon.
but if my MOT does fail because of it ill print off that other thread and get my boyfriend on it lol.

Ah such a nice relief. Ive just worked out I dont need to get my cambelt done for a good few 21,000 more miles and now hopefully i wont have to get a new ABS pump. which means i can spend my money on paintwork and gadgets for the car instead 8)

cheers again guys. youve put my mind to rest

Hey Verity, so what was the outcome? My ABS light came on today. Its gone off again now but this sounds alarmingly similar to your problem!

cheers

To be honest with u I never got round to doing anything! It never came back. Next time it pops up I'll do the good old fuse clean. But everythings ok for now *thank god* and it went thru the mot and all. So fingers crossed nothing to worry about :D
