Random instrument cluster question

With a lot of help from Graeme86 from Australia (modifying his schematic originally designed for Mk4 Golfs), I'm in the process of retrofitting DRLs to my 9n. OEM style, like the Mk6 Golf, not the chavvy (sorry) led strips every Tom, Dick and Harry are running. It works by having the main beams come on at 30% intensity when the light switch is set to off.

Just a question, does anyone's Polo have a warning light telling you your sidelights and / or dipped beams are on - in the instrument cluster? I know an LED exists for the purpose, and is wired up in the Fabia and A2. I've got a feeling no such light comes on in the 9n. Am I correct? If so, I'll be using this as a warning lamp that lights up when the DRLs are acitvated.

Thanks,
Ash :)

Don't think my 9N3 has any such warning lamp mate, only the dials/needles light up on mine. I haven't got a clue if such a lamp is present or not though, so I can't confirm that.

Are you doing it from scratch or are you using the Volkswagen kit?

Thanks for that, that's what I thought but I wanted to make sure :)

A lamp is present according to the wiring diagrams for the car, but I don't think it's actually connected to anything. Does a DRL kit exist for the 9n3? I'll be making it from scratch using random relays from the VW part bin and a 'special' relay found in Canadian BMW Z3s. Won't be happening till Winter though. I do a proper tutorial when done.

Found this a while ago, description isn't too great but it says that the lights are at a 'reduced intensity.' Not sure how similar it is to the effect that you want to achieve but might be worth a look.

Shop4Volkswagen Daytime Running Lights

Sounds pretty cool though mate, good luck with it!

Thanks for that. Think I've seen that page before, someone of uk-mkivs mentioned that. I think that "kit" uses a resistor / resistor wire bridged between certain pins on the headlamp switch to run the dipped beams at a reduced (~70%) intensity. The way I'll be doing it instead is running the main beams at a lower (~30%) intensity, but using a PWM relay (amongst others) instead. The reason being, that I'm thinking of going down the projector lens + HID route in the future, so using those at lower intensities as DRLs isn't really an option - the halogen main beams will have to be modified.

Aah I see what you mean, sounds pretty awesome. Will look pretty cool with the HIDs fitted as well.

Looking forward to pics when its finished.
