Rear view mirror help

It appears that a previous owner of my car had fitted a Golf rear view mirror, one of the autodim/rain sensing ones, although hadn't wired any of it up..And earlier, in a moment of madness trying to take just the mirror off, I pulled the whole thing off
This is what I have at the moment, from left to right (or top to bottom lol)
Metal base that sticks to the windscreen?
Strange gauze like material
Whats left of the rain sensor

Luckily I found a guide some guy in the US did on replacing these mirrors on a Mk4 Golf, this is what it should look like:

Hopefully I will be able to source the two bits of trim to go around the base
Now hopefully, this is where someone can help me, I need to know what is best to remove the old glue from the rain sensor (may aswell use it as something to put more bonding on) and the windscreen itself. Also what is best to then stick the metal base and sensor back to the windscreen like so, I still have the black circle on the windscreen to stick it to:

Sorry if I've not been very clear
