Really Unusual Problem

Driving back from work all of a sudden i managed to get a loud knocking noise from the front right of the car, the knocking gets faster as i accelerate but will sometimes stop if i hold the engine steady.
The unusual part is that sometimes its not there at all and the car drives like it always has without the knocking but then out of no where it will start again. I thought it might be the box but the car has been driving well and showing no signs of possible problems
I thought possible cv joint but its intermittent
ANYONE got a idea of what it could be or had the same problem
cheers

Could be a CV joint on the brink of failure - loud knocking on one side of the wheel often points to that. Id get it checked out

MIne did this.....I needed the whole driveshaft replacing. Like Alex said yours sounds like the CV -get it sorted now is my advice, before you need to replace the whole driveshaft which is costly to say the least.

Hi guys, my gti has exactly the same problem... its been going on for about 2-3 months now. its so intermitant that when i took it to the garage for them to check it out i couldn get it to knock! got them to inspect the drive shaft as the noise stopped as soon as i put my foot on the clutch so in my head it made sence to be the drive shaft. they couldnt find anything, told me to bring it back if it gets any worse! what do you guys think? it hasnt made a peep for about 3 weeks now.

As a CV joint starts to deteriorate it will show first going round corners … the worn parts are not in use while going in a straight line.
Test it by driving on full lock in an empty car park.
Is the noise speed or rev related?
Being intermittent and under acceleration it sounds like a worn spline on the drive shaft … but it would be unusual.

Yeah its only usually under light acceleration but have noticed it whilst driving around roundabouts aswell, but not as often.
