How fast are diesels then?

today i was in my mates mini cooper and a 1.4 TDi polo 9n pulled up along side at the traffic lights. at green it was even, and during 1st and 2nd gear the polo kept up with the mini! the 0-60mph of mini is around 8.5seconds. we were both  at how fast it can accelerate. however at 60mph we left him behind.
but its a diesel against a 1.6 petrol!!

so whats the 0-60mph of the TDi then?

You sure it wasn't a 1.9 TDi? If it was a sport spec, there's no visual differences between the 1.4 TDi and 1.9TDi.

0-60 in 1.9 is about 9secs; 1.4 is around 12secs IIRC.

It might have been the 1.9 as ratty said. Did it have a TDI or a TDI badge?

First and second are the TDI's downfall, it's 3rd when it pulls like a train

im sure it was a "twist" spec as it had 14"sau paolo alloys. sport models have 15" 5spoke melbournes? unless it down graded alloys!

anyway, im very impressed with diesels! :o

Acceleration of TDI's

Hi,

As someone else has said, acceleration off the line is hampered in a diesel, probably because the red-line rpm of around 4,500 (and really only to 4,000rpm is worth it) gets used up real quick and not even the bags of torque that diesels have makes much difference. By 2nd, certainly 3rd gear though, they pull really hard and go very well.

I changed from the 1.6 16v Polo GTi (125bhp) to a 1.9 TDi (105 bhp) and I really didn't notice all that much difference in performance - the diesel drives quite differently, and once you realise that, all the overtaking is just as swift

My 1.9tdi sport would reguarly slaughter most cars on the motorway whilst still delivering the goods MPG wise.

Round corners the mini would have the upper hand but as demonstrated by the Fabia VR/S vs Mini cooper battle on fifth gear it's all about torque which resulted in the Fabia beating the Mini by half a second round a track.

Forget 0-60 you'd waste most motors in the 30-70 30-50, heck the Fabia VRS is quicker from 40-70 than a Lotus Elise 111, surely that's reason enough to buy a VAG tdi?
