failed MOT need new shocks

hi guys

my GTI just failed the MOT:

Rear sock absorbers (leaking) (repair £400)
ns wheel bearing repair £75
rear brakes (binding, uneven) £? they don't know exactly what the problem is yet so can't get a quote
windscreen wipers £20
handbrake £50

the guy reckons to replace the rear shocks in going to cost me about £400, i feel maybe this is a bit too much, do you think i could replace them myself? how hard is it?

can anyone give me instructions or show me a video you might have?

thanks

For £400 it would be better just to get them replaced rather than repaired.
I'm not sure how much VW charge for replacement GTI shocks but you should be able to pick up a second hand pair for next to nothing. A lot of people who buy Polo's often replace the original suspension for either uprated shock absorber or coilover suspension so you should be able to get your hands on some OEM shocks fairly easily.

Alternatively you could buy yourself a set of uprated shocks for around £250-300.

Ben,

A set of used GTI suspension can be picked up easily on here - many people have it lying around as they have lowered theirs and often in great condition.

Is that front or rear wheel bearing?

hi, I might attempt to do this myself, if anyone has some spare ones please let me know, i don't mind just standard ones as i'm on a budget

(sorry i meant to say replace not repair)

it's one of the front bearings

also could someone tell me which tools i will need?

thanks for your help

Front bearings are a pain in the ass to change - best entrusted to a garage to be fair as they have to be pulled out and pressed in.

Rear shock on the other hand is easy peasy

Wouldn't touch the bearings either.

As for the shocks I ended up with mr perkins shocks and took me an hour to fit both sides. Still need to do the front tho.

Hi Larn, whereabouts are you based? I've got a full set of standard GTI suspension boxed up and doing nothing. Yours if you want them!
