a last minute opinion-appeal... would put it in a technical forum but i think theres a lot more activity up in the club house!

if the car goes to the garage tomorrow and it happens that at no point the 5 speed box is ready for fitting, before the mechanic is forced by time to stick the 4 back on and get the car off the ramp.... should I keep the "new" box and wait for the bits, or just send it all back and hustle for whatever refund i can get?

thoughts of future fitting (& whether it might be expensive ie >100 quid), doing it myself (& difficulty, danger - i know you have to get the driveshafts out and keep the box dead-level until fully disengaged from the clutch for one thing), or selling it on...... anyone need a 5 speed? (and is ok to pay a ton for it?)
or anyone who'd want a replacement 4, for that matter, if all goes well. like, to replace a knackered one, or to get one with a different final drive...

might it even be worth asking him to put the new one on and wait for the parts to arrive maybe friday morning? I don't need the car til friday eve, and it's likely i might not get to pick it up til friday in any case. only problem is he'd have to either fit it locked into 1st (no available linkage...) to maneuver it in/out of the workshop until those parts hopefully arrive (luckily the place is on a hill for reversing purposes) and it wont have much oil left in it..... plus God only knows what that might do to the labour charges and the bookings. knowing my luck he's probably fully booked for friday.

the saga ends this week... tired of this bulls***

Bunch of sock-cookers. They hadn't even got the parts out of the store! "Yeah mate, I can have it on the van tonight, be with you tomorrow morning"... very much similar line to friday... well dude, that's of little use to me as the car is already in the garage having the stuff done and I can't afford the labour costs to either get it down and put it up again, or tie up one of his ramps for 24 hours. Seeing as you told me it was being sent out friday night I thought I'd have plenty of time for a god-damn thursday booking, and i'm not putting this back again. You can expect your (damaged) gearbox back, and I will expect a full refund. Don't bother getting out of your armchair to fetch the replacement bits.

EDIT: Triple dutch sock cookers infact. They offered me a refund on the box (£100) but not the carriage (£40-50 all in, including the return). No way I'm paying for their mistakes, especially when it's half the price of the box. Far as the law stands it appears they are liable for that too. Sent em a letter explaining the situation, and will get trading standards involved if neccessary. This ain't on. Grrr.
The box itself, after I had a look myself, is definately f**x0red - the endplate is so deformed from some kind of impact that the oil seal stands a good millimetre proud of *both* surfaces it's supposed to mate with (ie a 2mil deformation) and leaking an unbelievable amount of oil. Perhaps I could hammer that back into shape, but it's not worth it what with fitting costs on top of what the garage already charged for the work. All in, with the essential maintenance (to keep moving, and not fail the mot in august) plus the cost of the box, shipping and fitting, I may as well have got my insurance for the rest of the year refunded, pushed the car off a cliff, and bought another one from a hagglable sucker. May as well make it so I only spent half it's value rather than 3/4ths.
(Little wonder it was bent though - sent in a Sony Explod subwoofer box that was plainly too small for it, with no attempt at adding any type of soft packing to cushion it).
