Drive By Wire?

Can anyone please explain what DBW is and how I find out what my car has DBW or N-DBW.

(I think) Drive by wire means there is no physical link between the engine and the accelerator, ie no accelerator cable. instead it is connected to the ECU by a wire, hence the name drive by wire. when pressure is applied to the accelerator an electrical signal is passed down the wire telling the ECU the driver wants to go quicker and to pump more fuel in2 engine.
Dont know how to tell if your car has DBW, what model is it? the polo gti has DBW and the 1.4 FSI may well have also.

sorry i just saw you have 1.4 16v, dont no if this has DBW, someone else might know

I have the same engine and I think it has DBW. You can test it: when driving, try to break slightly using your left foot while accelerating with your right foot. If it doen't accelerate, you have DBW.

Going by that then the 16v100 & FSI are both DBW
Not sure about the 1.4 or 1.2's

I have tried this DBW test and it doesn't have any effect on the acceleration.
Does anyone know of a "by sight" test? Can the VW dealer tell me from the VIN?

The easy way to figure this out is to simply put you foot on the accelerator. If you feel a moments lag before accelerating then you have drive by wire, as you will notice the difference between that and cable acceleration.
