Main Beam / Indicator Stalk

Hi Folks,
First time posting but I've been reading and searching through the forums looking for a solution to the problem above. Basically my missus wee polo (2003 1.4s) has a problem with the main beam always being on when the headlights are on.
The indicator stalk lever seems to be a fault. It does spring forward as if putting the main beam on but when you flick it back to the neutral position the main beam stays on. If you pull it back ever so slightly it (about 0.5cm) the main beam goes off. This meant that my wife had to hold it in to stop people flashing her with their headlights. I can still pull it right back to flash the lights.
I've taken the covers off and blew a can of compressed air into the lever to try and clean it but to no avail. Is it worth buying a new switch unit of ebay or can the stalk be fixed?
Thanks
Mick.
