why does the 1.4 tdi piston go ?

why do the 80 bhp engines fail !......im interested in the 1.4 tdi polo but what ive read up about them aint good,things like they are 3 cylinder and the piston fails and you have to replace the engine
question is why do they fail?

Who said that? Sounds like a bunch of old wives tales.
They're as reliable than the 1.9 TDIs, which are pretty much bulletproof as long as the correct oil is used and the timing belt intervals are respected.

I have been through 2 polo 1.4 tdi First one was the 9n and now the 9n3 (55reg) These come with SOLID engines as mines done nearly 100,000 and is still going strong. No problems at all (have 6 polos in the family all 1.4 tdi`s
Very reliable engine the 1.4 tdi is. So not to sure where you have heard about the pistons going.
As Ash said as long as you take care of them and use the correct oil and timing belt has been changed you have nothing to worry about

as ash said, not sure what youve heard. the 1.2 3 cylinder is not very reliable compared to the others. never heard bad things of the 1.4 or the 1.9 and ive owned them all except a gti.

thanks guys for all the replys,its just ive been searching on e-bay and found 4 of them that needed engine and all due to a cylinder.

Probably owned by idiots who didn't change the cambelt at the correct time, causing it to snap and take out the engine.
