I recently had my cambelt and waterpump done and explained the noise to the mechanic he said it should go once the cambelt has been changed, however its still there like an electric motor whirring every time i put my foot on the accelerator any ideas?
also have a constant ticking even when idle, is that the tappets?

Constant ticking could be loose tappets. I have no idea what that is to be fair though, so i'm in no way qualified to form any sort of opinion on that. I have a friend who's had loose tappets on his 1.4 16v Golf for the last 2 years with no issue whatsoever.
The whirring, how loud is it? Would you be able to get a sound clip/recording of the noise to help someone diagnose the issue?

cheers i thought it was the tappets
umm under hard acceleration it can be quite loud but driving normally you can just about hear it as soon as i press the pedal
i will try to get a recoding but generally sounds like a cross between a electric motor and air being forced through a gap

Were the tensioners replaced?
Could be a wheel bearing, could be clutch release bearing. Theres quite alot it could be tbf

Ok i didn't get a recording but noticed the noise only happens in 5th gear when doing around 30 and gradually gets louder and more annoying
presume so as thats what i paid for but i will ask my mechanic tomorrow

Oooh that sounds like gearbox! If its only in 5th, id say your 5 gear bearing (being plastic) has had enough and its grinding down. Get it checked ASAP.

Reminds me a bit of the noise my gearbox made when it went.

If its making noise, get it fixed, or the bearing collapses, the gear seperates, and goes through the side of the bell housing - thats mean a brand new gearbox as itll be dead from a refurb perspective

Not something you want to be messing around with by the sounds of it.
