I'm planning on starting to service my 9n3 myself. I have all the tools to do the job but was just wondering where the oil filter is located?
Ive had the car up on ramps and had a quick look but could see it. Could anyone point me in the right direction?

on the front of then engine
There is a plastic cover/splitter running under the first part of the engine, 4 bolts and it slides off, then the filter is very visible.

In order to remove the filter, you will need a 76mm Cup wrench. Did my service last week and the oil filter was really a b***h to remove

, no space at all.

sometimes they are a pain, best thing to do is when you re apply the new filter use oil on the seal so its easier to get off next time.
If you dont have a cup wrench or filter removal tool a rubber glove and strong arm sometimes works.

Yup I always do that with all my new Oil Filters. This was the first time my GTI had an oil filter change under my ownership

Dont think it would work with the fan housing in the way, unless you have small hands

I did 2 with my hands, took me around 10 mins of huffing and puffing but did it eventually.
I had lent all my tools so had to oil change with just a variable spanner.
It was great fun!

I found if you take the 3 screws out that holds the fan onto the housing, so you can move the fan about a bit, makes things a bit easier by giving you more room.

lol you think it's bad changing that, I had to change the camshaft sensor a couple of weeks ago which is like above/next to the oil filter and didn't have a spare oil filter so had to change it with the oil filter still attached...what a pain in the ass trying to get the clip and bolt undone in such a tiny space!!!
