Hi guys,

I'm trying to save a few beans and hoping to fit some genuine VW mudflaps to the front and rear of my polo myself, without paying the horrendous labour charges of a main dealer. You can pick up the genuine flaps for around £45-£50 on the german eBay but fitted at a main dealer they are £140. I'm just wondering how easy they are to fit? I've looked under the wheel arches and there's no indication to where they screw in or anything. If anyone has any advice or tips on how to fit them i'd greatly appreciate it

Hmmms do they not fit under the screws that hold the bumpers in place? for example under the front arch, there are screws that holds the front bumper in place? i'll have a look tmr if theres some on the opposite side.

But if there aren't any screws, then most liekly have to drill your own holes?

Mudflaps usually use the screws in the arch liner and a couple of self tappers to fit. Dead easy job - definitely worth doing yourself. Incidentally, you shouldn't need to go on German ebay for them, pretty sure you can get them for a similar price in the UK. Google 'Shop4Volkswagen'. I got mine from them, really good service. They are a VW parts dept that sells accessories over the internet, so should have the 6R ones.

Just looked on Shop4Volkswagen.co.uk and they're actually cheaper than on the German eBay so thanks! Definitely going to order some later and have a bash at fitting them myself. Thanks again!

I'm getting some flaps for the gti, stone chips are a nightmare. The dealer i got the car from said they can get them for £80, that's for all 4.

Yeah I rang my local dealer today to ask for a price without fitting and they said £79.99. I've noticed today, the screws which hold the arch lining in place, have a strange head on them. So if I do fit them myself I don't think i'll be able to get the screw out/in. If anyone knows what type of screwdriver is needed to remove those screws, i'd be grateful

Star shaped? They are called Torx screws, you can get the bits required to undo them from halfords/ebay etc. Quite useful to have a set about as most of the interior trim is usually bolted on with this sort of screw. Should be T20/T25, but I'd just get a small set of them for the future.

anyone got a picture of them fitted im thinking of putting a set on mine to see if it tames the spray my car seems to acquire

Save your money

I'd be inclined to agree with Edi30 and say save your money. Fitting them yourself is a pain as you have to remove the wheels and drill 5 holes in the arch lining. I bought some not realising this and ended up taking them back. I would have paid extra for them fitting but on the scale of things, £160 for them fitting just seems stupid so I decided not to bother. I'd rather have the money and wash my car more often

Yeah I thought the same, but they are far from it. There's probably an alternative way to fitting them than making your arch lining look like a swiss cheese with all the holes, but i'm just gonna leave it

Bought a full set from Shop4Volkswagen a couple weeks back, very impressed. About half the price my dealer was asking, delivery was prompt and they came with all the fitting instructions included. You do have to drill a few liitle holes in the plastic wheel arch liner (No drilling metal) but to be honest it was a doddle, just took my time on a sunny afternoon. I quite fancy one of the chrome strips for the edge of the rear hatch, they're about £20 cheaper from them.
