Hi im looking for some help here, my car an 02 9n 1.4 16v Sport 105k fails to start sometimes?? Ive had it serviced new plugs oil and filters the mechanic said its starting fine. Got it back and it started fine the first 3-4 times and then when I tried again it struggled to start the engine fired up and juddered and cut out? then it started turning over and turning over and not firing? Then I stopped took the keys out and tried again...started after a few turns of the engine and juddered I put some power down and it fired up to 7 thousand spitting if you know what I mean? Then its fine after that? The starter motor before it went to the garage was whining I was told that it was sticking? But now it semms to have stopped whining? Please help its doing my nut in and im thinking about getting shut of it now!! Thanks in advance :D

my immediete guess would have been the starter motor like if it isnt that then spark plugs but uv replaced them, u say its spitting this could possibly be a missfire or uv mabe got air in the fuel line if its none of those then id look into ur injectors and mabe even the fuel pump??

also might be worth scanning it with vag com this may bring up a fault u are unaware of especially if its electrical

If it is the starter motor then surely it wouldnt start at all? Sorry to sound thick but what is Vag com? and where can I source one? Do you need a laptop etc... Thanks for your reply. :)

I have a 6n2 and have had every problem under the sun with it, this sounds very similar to when my coil pack went, 1 port wasn't sparking that made the car start but drive very badly loss of power juddery cut out sometimes and then 2 ports stopped sparking and it would barley start at all. I'd say try that but it being electrical it's a non returnable part so maybe try some you know with a 9n or 9n3 and ask if you can change it over and see if that fixes yours, there held in by 4 number 5 Allen key bolts if I remember rightly.

Failing that does it start fine if the engine is cold ?. Or will it fail on a first try in the morning after a night of non driving ?.

Sound like it might even be your engine temperature sensor I'd put money on it being one of the two. See if you can test someone's coil pack before buying one as I'm sure there like £40 and non returnable as it's an electric part. If it's an engine temp sensor then it will start when the engine is cold but as soon as you reach a bit of temperature even from something a small as a 5 min journey it won't turn over till it's completely cooled. If you get an engine temperature sensor make sure you have spare coolant cause you will loose vast quantities.

You my friend was bang on!! Temp sensor fault came up, aswell as air con fault but who cares its never really hot enough for air con lol. New temp sensor was fitted yesterday, I know its been along time to sort but Ive just been lazy and getting by with it, now she starts first time all the time so far :) Thanks so much for all your answers muchos appreciated :D
