Hi All
Engine block warning light came on this morning (over the weekend did apporx 300 miles without anything happening, no warning lights). Understand it means something about exhaust/emissions (?). Is there a short cut you could do to check fault code (on Corsa you do a paper clip test, you short two terminals in fuse box).

No, I'm sorry to say that things have moved on a bit since VX used that cunning trick (I made up a proper link!) which involved fitting a link to the diagnostic port, get a bit of paper and pen, switch on ignition and watch and record, using useful info from Practical Car Mechanic to point you in the right direction.

You will need a code reader, ie a scan tool, Gendan do one for about £40 delivered (a VAG only special) - or if you are keener, there is always VCDS.

its your lambda probe sensing somethings wrong, you recently put a aftermarket filter on it?

Apologies....been away for a week!!
Re engine block warning light.
Eventually light went out. Rang local VW garage and explained what had occured. He said that things like that 'happens' said that unless the car goes really bad ie: rough running/loss of power/generally 'not usual' things, to just go on driving......it happened yesterday when my daughter was driving, light came on she rang me, while I was talking, the light went out, not come back on since. Garage bloke said that I could come in but would cost approx £70 quid for a computer read out!! Bloody warning lights!!

You can buy vagcom for cheaper than that put another thread up stating where you're based and ask if anyone near has vagcom and has an hour spare to scan your car, you will find out exactly what the problem is and may even be able to clear the error.

When my coil pack went on my Polo, the engine block light came on and when AA came to fix it they scanned and cleared the fault light. Maybe just get them to do it (as it's free!!) if you're a member?!

70 quid!! when my engine warning light came on, on my old 6n2 the main dealers took it in and checked it for free as they only seem to charge for any work they do to fix the fault

i had this the other day, after i had a new cat and lamda sensor fitted so i knew it wasnt that.
i took it to my local garage, who plugged in the pooter, and it came back a fault with the brake pedal sensor, quick clean up, and it cleared the code and the warning light.
so find a local garage and get them to plug the pooter in and usually they wont charge you.
