In our family we have 2004 Polo 16V Sport, it has developed a really annoying fault which our previous 2002 1.4 S AC also had. Sometimes when the Air con is working a little harder it begins to emit a drumming noise. (normally position 3 and 4)

If its turned off and left off for a few minutes and then switched back on it stops doing it for a while before starting to make a drumming noise again.

Does it in all weather conditions etc. Dealer seems to think it due to pollen etc getting in the AC Fan? Is this possible? Surely there is a pollen filter between the incoming air and fan?

Anyone else had this or know how to fix it?

I'd get a second opinion if I were you, take it to another dealership after all if you're concerned then it's a warranty claim.

Hopefully someone else can come up with something more constructive than my drivel

To be honest, most cars I have heard with air con do it.

It's never going to be silent as it puts a big strain on the engine and electrical load, and is probably just the air con unit doing it's thing and the fans come on when you have A/C on too.

If you're worried take it to an other dealer, and also explain you think it's a fault and see if they will let you listen to other 16v's with it on.

Remember to run your air conditioning for at least 30 minutes every month

May be irrelevant, but I ran the VAG-COM diags thingy today on my car and it came up with a fault. Something to do with something being blocked or no voltage.

the print out reveals:

Address 08: Auto HVAC
Controller: 6Q0 820 045
Component: Klimaanlage X0840
1 Fault Found:
01596 - Motor for Outside/Recirculated Air Flap (V154)
41-10 - Blocked or No Voltage - Intermittent

V154 is actually a motor under the passenger foot well. I think it might be the Pollen filter clogged again. To get to the motor is pain as the glove box has to come out.

Just don't know how to put it to the dealer. Can't exactly say there's a fault no 01596, because they will then want to know how I know the fault code then the warrantee will be in the cold. LOL

Try running VAG-COM and see if you get a fault?

I know the AC gets louder as it works harder, but the noise is more like something in the fan causing it to vibrate or rub hence the drumming noise.

I am on my second Leon and my CC never does it.
