Wheel bearing

So there's a slight grinding noise coming from my front drivers side wheel I assume it's the wheel bearing, and it wasn't that bad till my 200 mile round trip yesterday now it's louder but am I best off replacing both sides at the same time or just the knackared one ?. Cars done extensive mileage and have no idea when they were last changed I can't ever remember having done them.

General rule of thumb, dont fix what isnt broken!!

Like i said its general, when replacing stuff like arb/wishbone bushes or topmounts then replace both sides as obviously replacing one side will have a negative effect on performance. However if your wheel bearing isnt gone on the other side there is not point replacing it with a newer one as it is going to be no more efficent than what you already have.

Dont make work for yourself mate, especially where there is no benefit to be gained!

Then again the other way to look at it is youll need to get the car camber and tracking etc done as the hub will likely be removed to press the bearing in/out, and for the cost of a wheel bearing its worth the extra effort as it is likely the other wheel bearing will fail in future and the same will happen again.

It really depends on if your garage has the tools to replace the wheel bearing in situ like VW can do without removing the hub from the car
