Is it really illegal to have another country's EU emblem on your number plate?

It's illegal to have anything at all other than the gb one.

If you desperately want a German strip on your plates (the most popular choice for VW's) then you have to buy/register the car in Germany and drive it back to the UK!

Better off just getting pressed metal plates from Dubmesiter, with or without the GB band they look very nice - especially if you fire them into some German plate surrounds (Dubmeister sell these as well).

Chris.

Yes, it's only legal to have genuine plates of another country if the car was built/bought there and has been imported with its original plates.

Oh :( i keep trying to find ways of getting this done.

Would it not be possible to take it there register it in the country, then probably not straight away but eventually bring it back

No. You could do it but you'd have to reregister it in Britain again after 6 months I believe. You can't just drive around on foreign plates indefinitely. I have a feeling that it isn't particularly cheap to register it in Germany anyway, seeing as you'd need to buy their version of road tax as well. Not worth the money at all.

If it's that important to have the German emblem instead of the UK one, then get some show plates from demonplates or similar. Not legal for road use but you can have the emblem on them.

As long as the font's the UK standard one, I'd say there's a very slim chance plod would pull you over for an incorrect country badge. I don't condone it, but I see misplaced characters, dodgy fonts and other "illegal" side badges (BMW, playboy, etc) on a daily basis. Just put correct plates on come MOT time.
