When you put the air con on it will kick in the condenser unit. This could be mistaken as the fan. My fan seems to have a real meaty wine to it

Almost like dyson cyclone technology

The reason I asked about the air con, is if the resistor in the fan fails, the fan cannot run at its slow speed and as a result the air con rad heats up really quickly and the fan ends up on full blast almost immediately as it can't run on a slow speed
Its a new fan if so.

That's interesting. My fan has a life of its own and kicks in and out all the time. It is aircon related as when you turn the aircon off it stops. It has the added side effect of raising the revs on my car also. Perhaps if the fans going into full chat mode then the battery/alternator are struggling to keep up with the load, although the battery looks nearly new.
Hmm some more investigation required here I think!

Fan draws like 180W on full pelt, so it will raise the revs due to the increased draw

Makes sense. Bloody annoying thought, sounds like the cars map is all over the place and it's hunting on idle. I think I might try a new fan to see if that solves the issue. Thats another job on the list :/
