Slipring problem

Hi there

I recently changed the pedal box on my 6N2 polo, and now I have an airbag light. I did take the steering wheel off to realign it, but the battery had been off for a day before, and for hours after. I even drove it and there was no airbag light, but this is where it changes.

First, on the bottom of the slipring (under the steering wheel), there is a little connector, it's an Lshape IIRC, and it slides along the bottom of the track. I was turning right, had no problems nd all of a sudden heard my cowling get cracked off when I nearly hit full lock. That connector some how came out of its little notch, and rode all the way up the side of the wheel even turned the indicator stalk on. I guess this turned my airbag light on. Got back, tightened all the cowling up, it still does it. I can go from to left to right all day and it won't move, but soon as I get close to full right hand lock, it pops out and rides up.

One thing I can think of, is I'm missing a peice of cowling, sits directly under the ignition stalk (I have the 2 halls that go above and below the column), but it looks as if I'm missing this corner peice. Could this be to do with it? Of not Amy ideas?
