Ignition barrel stiff

Hi Guys.

My Polo has suddenly started becoming really stiff when turning the ignition. It's mainly to where the car actually starts that's stiff.

Only started happening in the last few days but getting annoying. I did have the car tracking done and then it started happening but know this isn't related (unless the garage forced the key while the steering lock was on I guess).

Was gonna try wedging open the key flap and spraying some wd40 in first.
Any other ideas ? I am presuming a new replacement barrel isn't a cheap job ?

Cheers,
Gareth

I've had a VW for 11.5 years and 9.25 years and never had any lock/key problems yet. Fords with the later "secure" locks did tend to give trouble if the key had been forced or lock got worn - but they sold lock rebuild kits which were cheap and easy(ish) to fit. Again only Ford key/lock experience, but with them the lock barrel and switch were two seperate items - so you could work out if it was a barrel or switch issue. I'd need to look at the VAG parts listing to see how VW locks are made up. I have noticed that even at the main dealer, the service desk people don't bother to "take the weight" off the steering lock before turning the key - and found that a bit annoying!
