cat regulations

hi guys
i was wondering what the current regulations on cat's were.
as i am going to replace mine with one of hardhitters de-cat pipes, and wanted to know if i stilll need a cat for mot?
polo gt was registered in 91

Don't quote me on this, but I think you will be ok. The law states something to the effect of all vehicles manufactured after '93 have to have a cat. Hope that helps. I definately think its '93, but can't be too sure.

Any car registered from 1st August 1992 is subject to a catalyst emission test.
Cars registered before (including yours) don't have a catalyst emission tests. So you will be fine

I've been told there's a loophole, whereby if the engine's older than the car you sit the emissions test relevant to the engine. But you must be able to prove this. I'm hoping that this will be enough to get my K-reg through the MOT without a cat, seeing as the G40 engine is from a J-reg car. Failing that, I'll just have to be nice to the MOT tester...
Oh, and just to add - my bro's GT has just been MOT'd, it's decatted and the emissions apparently were very low - it'd have passed the CAT emissions test easily.

There are two loopholes for cars registered after August 1992 (K reg or newer)
1. If the car has been fitted with an older engine then cats fitted or not you can demand a non cat test (bear in mind you will need a bit of proof here to authenticate the older engine)
2. If there is no visible engine number showing then they have to revert to a non cat test (again the engine change senario)
My 94 L reg 24v Senator has no cats fitted but the engine number is hidden under a bout 3 coats of block paint and that goes non cat test.
